WHO Issues Warning Over Critical Shortage of Obesity Jabs

Under one in 10 patients who could benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy have access to them, states the WHO as it issues its initial recommendations on the therapies.

Given over a billion people worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines recognises that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be managed with holistic and ongoing care," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are significant hurdles to widespread availability to the jabs that can help people shift substantial weight, explains the agency.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even in the present best projected outlook, the production of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.

The advice encourages governments and firms to expand availability, through approaches like licensing agreements.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Operate

These medications replicate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and increase feelings of fullness so users reduce food intake.

Individuals typically see weight reduction in the initial weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.

Studies points to patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of halting the medication, as their typical appetite return.

To be above a healthy weight raises your chance for developing medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity impacts individuals in every country and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
